Preparing for the Journey: Introduction
“I just want to feel better!”
We’re glad that you have chosen to learn about Transformation Prayer Ministry (TPM) and how it may benefit your life. People typically seek out TPM because they feel bad about something and they want the bad feelings to go away. This is because they see their emotional pain as a problem that needs to be resolved or an ailment that needs to be alleviated. They often have already tried many other things to resolve their “pain problem” and hope that TPM will bring lasting relief.

The Real Reason for the “Bad” Feelings
For many, it is surprising to discover that the true purpose of TPM is NOT to make bad feelings go away. Emotion plays an important role in TPM, but emotional pain is not viewed as the problem that we seek to resolve. We view emotional pain as a means by which to address the real problem. Emotional pain is a part of the warning system God created to grab our attention and motivate us to come to Him for truth and comfort. In a sense, the pain is our friend; it first lets us know that something is wrong and then points us in the direction that we need to go order to find freedom.
“We feel whatever we believe.”
It’s just as surprising for some people to discover that no one or thing is causing them to feel what they are feeling. It seems natural to assume that I feel bad because of what has happened to me or because of the situation that I am in, but this is just not so. A foundation principle of TPM is that we feel whatever we believe. Our beliefs determine how we view and interpret life as it happens. And this interpretation of our situation determines what we feel in the midst of it. The good news is, if our belief changes, then our emotion will naturally change as well; even if our situation remains the same.
No Doctors or Patients Here
People sometimes mistakenly view the TPM facilitator as the “physician” who will hopefully “fix” them or tell them what to do in order to overcome the problem. Those same people then view themselves as “patients” who needs “healing.” Both of these viewpoints—TPM as a pain reliever and the doctor/patient model—are misleading and do not accurately describe the purpose of TPM or the relationship of those involved.
Mentors and Mentees
First of all, it is important for you not to view the facilitator as the one who will be dispensing anything—words of knowledge, spiritual direction, answers, opinions, counsel, biblical truth or steps to take—but rather view him or her as the mentor of a ministry process in which you are an active participant. He will not diagnose your life situation or offer you any counsel or advice about your current circumstance. He is actually more of a trainer or mentor, who will train and equip his “mentee” with the principles, process, and purpose of TPM.
Becoming Equipped for the Journey
As you begin this journey, you should not view yourself as a recipient of ministry, but rather as a mentee; someone who is being trained and equipped. You will learn this process and it will, hopefully, become a personal life skill and daily practice. You are here to gain a new perspective on your current situation as well as learn a process that will serve you well throughout your life. This is your journey and you can equip yourself for the journey.
There is nothing the facilitating mentor will do during a session that you, the mentee, cannot learn to do yourself. The mentor possesses no special knowledge, other than what is also freely available to you. As the mentee, you are encouraged to take personal responsibility for becoming well equipped
TPM as a Lifestyle and Practice
As you learn this process, you should be able to work in tandem with the prayer minister and, at some point, begin administering the process by yourself. It is vital to not view the ministry session as the place where you go to get “fixed” or as a way to manage or defuse your emotional pain. Rather, you should view every session as a place where you can come to better understand TPM as a lifestyle and daily practice. Treat the session as supervised practice rather than a time to get “cleaned-up.”
This is your journey. Be diligent to prepare and equip yourself for it.
